I always think of the midpoint of a segment like the average of the two ends.
Add together the x coordinates and divide by 2, then add together the y coordinates and divide by two.
For the x's 1 + (-5) = -2
2
For the y's 3 + (-1) = 1
2
the ordered pair that makes up the midpoint is (-2,1) which lies in the second quadrant.
