To find the price of painting the silo, you want to find the surface area of the silo in square feet, and then multiply it by the price per square foot of the paint.
For the (lateral) surface area of a cylinder, imagine "unrolling" the material on the outside of the cylinder until it makes a rectangle. The height of the new rectangle is 30 ft, same as the cylinder itself. The width of the rectangle is the same as the circumference of the cylinder, so diameter*π = 10π ft (approximately 31.4 ft).
Therefore, the surface area of the cylindrical silo is (30 ft)x(10π ft) = 300π square feet.
To find the price of covering that area in paint, multiply the square footage times the price per square foot. The units will cancel out to give you the price:
300π square feet x $1.50/sq. ft. = $450π = $1413.72
If you are allowed to use a calculator, leave the symbol for pi in your calculations (instead of substituting a value) until the very last step to get the most accurate answer.
Hope this helped!
