asked 05/28/19Why was having a written law code a victory for the plebeians of Rome?
It encouraged the upper class to make laws that benefited them. It allowed them to overthrow the patricians and gain power for themselves. It ensured that laws were enforced equally for all social classes. It provided them with opportunities to seize power from the dictators.

The existence of a written Law Code (the Twelve Tables) made it much easier to prove when a powerful person (often the patron) was abusing the rights of the lesser person because of the written limits set. For example, once debt slavery was forbidden, if a patron still tried to sell a client into slavery, they could protest that is illegal according to the Twelve tables. The written codification of law led to precedent and uniformity, which encouraged judges to deliver the same penalty for each similar offense (like the same fine for stealing a chicken).
This did NOT allow or help the overthrow of the patricians (totally wrong). And it did NOT in any way help "seize power from dictators" another mistake, because there were no dictators from whom power had to be seized, except Sulla and Caesar. And in neither case did this happen. Sulla resigned, and Caesar was assassinated - to the harm of everyone - even the assassins.
No - the other answer is twice Wrong. It is flat out wrong to claim the codification of law led to the overthrow of the patricians. Codification of law is about 450 BC. The Patricians continued to hold both consulships every year until 367. And I still see lots of patrician consuls holding power between 100 BC and 49, the year the civil war broke out - about 45. That is not overthrow. And there was never a seizure of power from dictators. In Rome, all dictators except Sulla served a 6 month term and then resigned. Only Sulla abused that power to stay in power for 18 months. And he was Stalin in Roman days. Can you name for me any Roman dictator before the Ides of March from whom power was seized? No, you can't. You can write me if you have any questions. I will gladly explain.
