Mackenna, we solve this just like there is an =.

 

3(m + 4) > -2m + 1

3m + 3(4) > -2m + 1

3m + 12 > -2m + 1

5m + 12 > 1

        5m > -11

          m > -11/5

 

The only difference is that we reverse the sign when dividing by a negative number.  Had our next-to-last step been -5m > -11, we would have ended up with m < 11/5.

3m+12>-2m+1       Now solve by putting terms that are alike together,  subtract 12from both sides

     -12         -12

 

3m     >  -2m-11           Add 2 to both sides

 +2m      +2m

 

5m  >  -11                   Divide by 5

5           5

 

m  >   -2.2                    To check answer, plug in a number that is greater than -2.2 like 0

 

 

3(0+4) > -2(0)+1

 

   12   >   1         It worked!
