      y = Sammy's age

 

x + y = 29

      x = 2y + 2

 

Replace x by 2y + 2 in the first equation to obtain (2y + 2) + y = 29.

So, 3y + 2 = 29

            3y = 27

              y = 9

 

Sammy is 9 years old and Nick is 20 years old.
