a boat, which moves at 18mph in still water, travels 14 miles downstream in the same amount of time it takes to travel 10 miles upstream. find the speed of the current.

The trick here is to remember that the time traveled in each direction is the same.

C is the speed of the current and T is time traveled

(18+C)T=14

(18-C)T=10

(18+C)/14 = (18-C)/10 first multiply through by 2 then

90+C = 126-7C
