The living room is rectangular and has a length of 12 feet and a width of 16 feet. The cost of removing the existing carpet is $75, and the cost of the new carpet including installation, will be $22 per square feet. What will the total cost of the carpet be assuming that you can only purchase the carpet and one square yard increments and that you will like to spend the least amount of money possible? Please show me step by step how to do this.

Total cost = cost of removal + cost of new carpet

       A square yard is 3 feet by 3 feet. No problem with the width - 12 is divisible by 3. The length is an issue.

       16 is not divisible by three. The area must be calculated as 12 by 18

C = 75 + 22(12·18)

C = 75 + 22(216)

C = 75 + 4752

C = 4827

 

The cost of carpeting is $4,827.
