Good question. In the past -- before the elevator was invented, it was the other way around. Nobody wanted to live on the top floor as most buildings would be 3-5 floors tall (check out old cities like Paris). The advantage back then was the lower floors. Now, the elevator has made higher floors easily accessible and desirable because of views. For example, I am typing this from my office at the 22nd floor in Los Angeles where I can see everything at a beautiful scale with framed views all around. There are also 8 elevators that are designated for certain floors, so within seconds I can go down to the first floor. Very convenient. Privacy, safety and surrounding views make higher floors the most desirable these days as is evident with penthouses, etc.
