The earliest written texts of Greek are the Linear B tablets recording the dialect of Greek spoken at Mycenae in the

Peloponnese and at Crete which date from the 14th century BCE. Greek is a dialect of the Indo-European family of

languages and is thought to have separated from the parent language sometime in the previous two millennia.
