There is actually a huge difference between the koine Greek and the modern a Greek. As a point of reference think of Shakespearian language or the language of the King James Bible vs Modern English. Unfortunately is not true that those who understand modern can also understand koine. All Greek students are required to take koine Greek as part of their curriculum in school but the language is still quite foreign since is not used in everyday life. Hope this helps! Good luck.
