When is violence appropriate?

Question

In what situations would violence be appropriate? The way I see it, the only excuse is **as a response** to violence (self-defense). Am I missing anything?

Violence is never appropriate except in cases when you're defending yourself or your family from an attacker. Even in those cases, action should be taken to subdue and disarm, not to harm.
