The best answer I can find is that the artboard can fit to the size of the square, but not the other way around.
It is still fairly simple, but a couple more simple steps are included. In the end, the square and the artboard should be perfectly fitted together.
- Create a new document (any size artboard will do.)
- Create the exact size of your square
- You can select the Rectangle tool and click once anywhere on the open Illustrator window
- The Rectangle tool options should pop-up for you to type in the exact measurements you want your square and artboard to be
- Make sure your new square is selected
- Go to the Object menu > Artboards > Fit to Artwork
- Your Artboard should snap to the size of your square
Even though it is probably not the answer you were looking for, it is the best alternative I can find.
