Squires were taught how to fight and followed the knights into battle. Even if they were not knights, they were trained to fight and be a part of the cavalry. They were not waiting, twiddling their fingers at the side of the battlefield. They would prepare their knight for battle and later, during battle, would fight beside their knight. Another thing to remember is that becoming a knight was expensive, so many people would remain squires.
