Hi Darlene, Set up two equations to solve this problem. Let x represent one of the numbers and y represent the other one.
Equation 1, one integer is twice the other:
x = 2y
Equation 2, which is an inequality:
x + y < 30
Substitute for x using 2y:
2y + y < 30
3y < 30
Divide by 3:
y < 10
Solve for x:
x + y < 30
x + 10 < 30
Subtract 10 from both sides:
x < 20
The greatest pair of two numbers is 9 and 18, and are lest then 30.
