Nathan,
When you think about the amount of crust on a pizza, what do you think we are considering? Do you think we are considering the area or the circumference of the pizza?
Since the crust is just the extra breading around the pizza, we are thinking of the circumference. We can now consider the formula for the circumference of a circle:
circumference = ∏ * diameter or circumference = 2 * ∏ * radius
In the question, we are given the diameter, so we can apply the first formula. Let's plug in what we know for the medium pizza:
circumference = (3.14) * (12 inches)
circumference = 37.68 inches
Let's do the same thing for the small pizza:
circumference = (3.14) * (5 inches)
circumference = 15.7 inches
So now that we've found the individual circumferences, we can find how much more we get from the medium pizza by subtracting the small pizza from the medium pizza.
37.68 inches - 15.7 inches = 21.98 inches.
Therefore, you get 21.98 inches more crust on the medium pizza than the small pizza.
