Make a commitment to be genuinely interested in the other person. Try to get out of yourself for a while and focus on her/him. You can create some general questions to ask each person. For example, “Can you tell me about yourself? Where were you born? Where do you live now? What subjects do you enjoy in school? What kind of music do you like?” Then, those questions will lead you to more questions for the person.
Learn to be a good listener. This is the crown jewel of communications. Make long pauses in your talking. Look into the eyes of the person you are talking with and remember to say “thank you”.
Caring about the other person more than yourself opens the door.
