Donald is on the right track but instead of using 9/16 LB to represent  3/4 LB of cheese in ounces. It should really be 12/16. In which case 2/3 of 12/16 LB would equate to 8/16 LB which is the same as 8 OZ or 1/2 LB of cheese.

 

3/4 LB  = 12/16 LB

12/16 LB * 2/3 = 24/48 LB = 8/16 LB = 8 OZ. 

 

3/4 * 2/3 = 6/12 = 1/2.

There are a number of ways to solve this problem. I'm not sure what your teacher is looking for. But the concept is that you want to find out what 2/3 of 3/4 is.

 

One way is to convert the cheese from pounds to ounces. There are 16 ounces in a pound. We know that. So to find out how many ounces, multiply both the numerator and denominator (of 3/4) by "4" so you've got 16 in the denominator. That comes out to 9/16, or 9 ounces.

 

You want to figure out what 2/3 of that is. Well, 1/3 of 9 ounces is 3 ounces. (9/3). That means 2/3 is double that, or 6 ounces. And there's your answer: 6 ounces.
