Pedro and Ivan raced each other in a 24 mile race. After 20 minutes Pedro has traveled 5 miles. Ivan spent the 20 minutes traveling at 16 miles per hour. Which person is in first place after 20 minutes?

If Pedro goes 5 miles in 20 minutes (1/3 of an hour), that means in a whole hour he could do 5 miles, 3 times--or 15 miles per hour.

 

If in the same 20 minutes, Ivan was traveling 16 miles an hour, that means he's going faster, and therefore Ivan is in first place.

 

In 20 minutes, Pedro will run his 5 miles, while Ivan will run 1/3 of 16, which is 5 1/3.
