You need to use the distributive property: a(b+c) = ab + ac.  So:

 

2(x + y) - 2y

 

= 2x + 2y - 2y

 

= 2x

Addition

Subtraction

1. Add/subtract, etc, found in parenthesis.

2(7 + 8) - 2y

2(15) - 2y

2 Multiply/Divide. What you come to.

2(15) - 2y

2(15) - 2y

30 – 2*8

30 –16 = 14
