Is PMP certification an appropriate career goal for someone about to start a career in project management?

Is PMP certification a requirement for a successful career in Project Management? At which point would it be appropriate for a newly starting project manager to plan to include PMP certification?

Planning (career or otherwise) is very important. And, since it is your plan, you may change it for good reason (without submitting a Change Request and getting approval from a Control Board).

The PMI web site provides excellent summaries of PMP and CAPM.. The requirements for each certification are what you need to review.

PMI membership is a good place to start. Then, a variety of documents and videos present the terms and concepts of PMI's view of Project Management. It is very different than typical approaches to doing work.
