The term formed elements is often taken to include cell fragments or remnants as well as actual cells. For example, platelets, which are in the category of formed elements, have not historically been considered to be cells due to their lack of genetic material, and have instead been classified as fragments of megakaryocytes; there has, however, been considerable scientific debate on this topic.
