How to correctly say "my friend" in French to express a friendship relation?

My French teacher always say that *“mon amie”* or *“mon ami”* expresses an amorous relationship, like “girlfriend” and “boyfriend”.So, what would be the current way to say things like (for example):- *I have a friend that lives near my house.*- *I'm going to travel with my friend.*---Mon professeur de français dit toujours que «mon ami(e)» exprime une relation amoureuse.
