How to correctly say "my friend" in French to express a friendship relation? — Comment limiter la portée de «mon ami(e)» à une relation d'amitié?

My French teacher always say that *“mon amie”* or *“mon ami”* expresses an amorous relationship, like “girlfriend” and “boyfriend”.So, what would be the current way to say things like (for example):- *I have a friend that lives near my house.*- *I'm going to travel with my friend.*---Mon professeur de français dit toujours que «mon ami(e)» exprime une relation amoureuse. Comment peut-on formuler ces phrases en étant certain qu'elles évoquent une relation d'amitié:- *J'ai un ami qui habite à coté de chez moi.*- *Je vais faire un voyage avec mon ami.*

Ami n'est pas forcément un terme amoureux.

mais afin d'éviter toute confusion vous pouvez utiliser le terme "camarade".

Ex: " j'ai un camarade qui habite près de chez moi".

Colette is right, "ami(e)" means friend and does not have a love connotation. Petit(e) ami(e) has a love connotation like in boyfriend or girlfriend. Another word for "ami" is "copain"/"copine". "Un ami(e) is somebody you trust, un "copain"/"copine" is somebody you just hang out with, somebody you just have fun with.

There is a clear difference between a friend and a boyfriend/or girl friend.

If you call your friend: mon amie or mon ami, it is a friendship kind of friend.

If you call your friend: ma petite amie or mon petit ami, you are referring to an amourous relationship.

Your French teacher should make the difference between the two:

J'ai un ami qui habite à coté de chez moi. (just a friend)

J'ai rencontré mon petit ami pendant une conference l'année dernière. (my boy friend)
