To best improve your verbal performance on your own, you should do three things: 1) read more higher-level passages (from, say, an academic journal) in your down time; 2) practice vocabulary using hand-made flashcards; and 3) take practice tests and review the results to see where you can improve your knowledge base and reasoning skills.
