This is one question that I am continually posed in one way or another in regards to multiple subjects. Statistics is one of the math topics that is used in so many industries. Below I broke down a few different industries that often use statistics but by no means is this list all encompassing.
Business
This is an umbrella term that includes manufacturing, marketing, engineering, and much more. Businesses use statistics to help determine how a business can deliver services that satisfy customers. This can be seen through work on how much a business needs to make in order to collect a profit. Statistics also help quantify data points which can be used to accurately market products to the public. Statistics are utilized across almost every aspect of running a business in one form or another. If anything they assist in identifying trends and predict future trends.
Health and Medicine
These is another one of those overarching terms that include public health, pharmacology, and even genetics. Statistics are used consistently in this branch as a way to assist in preventing disease, prolong life, and explore viable ways to support a healthy lifestyle. In other words, statisticians in the field of health and medicine use their field specific knowledge to develop studies, hypothesis, and possible solutions through the process of data collection. Thus, statistics help to quantify the data collection and see possible outcomes depending upon the prescribed medicine and symptoms.
Learning
Sometimes this branch is referred to as Education (personally I prefer the word learning to due the more encompassing nature of the word). In this realm, statistics help to note effectiveness of strategies being implement in the classroom. They also explore issues that hinder students and how the support (or lack of support) is impacting students.
Statistics assist in quantifying data points; however, with that said, it is incredibly important to ask for the context of the numbers being presented to you. Without the context, the numbers may appear extreme or terrible but within the context they may not be as significant. Statistics appear in our everyday world whether or not we realize it. By recognizing that they are not solely tied to scientific research or math class, we are able to see how we can apply these skills to every day life.
I hope all of this was helpful! Good luck!
