First we put our equation into slope intercept form...
In slope intercept form, our equation is...
y = 2x + 1.
Now we use the formula, (y - y1) = m (x - x1).
(y - 1) = 2 ( x - (-2)) ---> (y - 1) = 2 (x + 2) ----> now distribute the 2 to the x and 2 inside the parentheses.
(y - 1) = 2x + 4 ---> next, add one to both sides of the equation...
y = 2x + 5.
Our equation y = 2x + 5 is the line parallel to the original equation and passes through the point (-2,1).
