When you're writing an equation with a fixed amount and a per unit amount, you multiply the per unit amount times the units (in this case, minutes).
So the equation is 40 + .45m = 48.10.
To determine the number of minutes: Subtract 40 from both sides of the equation: .45m = 8.10
Divide both sides by .45: m = 18 minutes
