Lets use the variable S to represent Sarah and the variable L to represent Lisa.
The first sentence tells us that Sarah and Lisa scored a combine total of 48 points, so that means that S+L=48.
Now let’s figure out the value for each variable.
The question tells us that number of points scored by Sarah is 12 points less than 3 times the number of points scored by Lisa. This means that the value of S is 3L-12 and the value of L is L.
Now substitute these values into the original equation of S+L=48. So the equation is:
3L-12+L=48
4L=60
L=15
S+15=48
S=33
