Calculating Work in Chemistry

I cannot understand these math concepts, and it would be great if someone could help me understand them!

A piston containing 1.5 L of gas at 1.00 atm is compressed to 1.25 L. Calculate the value for work in Joules (use correct sign.) Justify whether work was done to the system or to the surroundings.

Remember that 1 L atm = 101 J
