National Board Certified Teacher can help you/your child in all areas
Let's call students S and non-students N.
S + N = 486 (The number of students + the number of non-students = 486 people)
4S + 7N = 2463 (4 times the number of students + 7 times the number of non-students = $2463).
Since you can only solve an equation with one variable, we're going to change the first equation by subtracting N from both sides. S = 486 - N
Now we can plug 486 - N into the second equation instead of using S.
4(486 + N) + 7N = 2463.
Distribute the 4. 1944 + 4N + 7N = 2463
Put the N's together. 1944 + 11N = 2463
Subtract 1944 from both sides. 11N = 519 N = 47.18
Okay, that's a problem, because you can't have 18/100 of a person. It should have come out to a whole number. Are you sure you wrote the problem down correctly?
