Translating a function, that is, moving the graph of a function, to the left or right results in replacing the argument x of the function with x + h for left or x - h for right.
The function f(x) = x^2 is a simple parabola with its vertex at x = 0. If you move the parabola to the left by a distance h, you move the vertex to the left by the same distance. x = -h is the location of the new vertex.
