In , AB = 24 cm and BC = 10 cm. BD is perpendicular to AC. Find the ratio of the shaded area to the unshaded area.

I made the assumption that angle B = 90 degrees and BD is perpendicular to AC, then you have 3 similar triangles. And you can solve for the small area assumed to be shaded to the larger similar triangle unshaded. I arrived at a ratio of .1736

DB^2 = 24^2 - X^2 =

576-X^2

DB^2 = 10^2 - (26-X)^2

set them equal solve for x

X= 1152/52

Now you have 2 right triangles, x-DB-24

and 26-x- 10- DB

the shaded area versus unshaded probably means DBx13 versus xDB as they are the two major areas in this triangle.
