How do you solve 4x+3y=12

Its hard for me to solve i have tried everything but it doesnt give me the right answer.

Are we solving for x or y???

 

4x+3y=12

If you are solving for x

 

4x+3y=12

      -3y   -3y

4x=-3y+12

x=(-3/4)y+3     Dividing both sides by 4.

 

If you are solving for y

4x+3y=12

-4x        -4x

3y=-4x+12    Divide by 3

y= (-4/3)x+4

This is a relationship between X and Y that holds for several x's and several y's. 
if X = 0, then y = 4 
  if x = 1 then y = 3   etc. 

When you're solving, you want to find the specific equation** that identifies a Y for ANY X. 

4x + 3y = 12 
3y = 12 - 4x 
y = 12/3 - 4x/3 
Y = 4 - 4x/3   OR  Y = (12 - 4x) / 3

Just pick a number to plug in to x and figure out y to satisfy the equation. e.g.

 

if we choose 3 for x:

 

4(3) + 3y = 12 ------> in this case y = 0

 

if we choose 4 for y:

 

4x + 3(4) = 12 -------> in this case x = 0
