i kind of understand how to do this with whole numbers but i don't get it with fractions

It works exactly the same way with fractions. Remember when you multiply fractions you multiply numerator and denominators: (a/b)*(c/d)=ac/bd.

In your example 3 is a common factor in the numerator and 4 is a common factor in the denominator.

(3/8d) + 3/4 = (3/4)[(1/2d)+1]
