Dissociation of ionic substances refers to the separation of the ions that make up the substance. Thus, the dissociation of NaCl would be into Na+ ions and Cl- ions. Depending on the nature of the acid or the base, it may not ionize, but it would dissociate. NaOH (a base), will dissociate to Na+ and OH-, but acetic acid (CH3COOH) will ionize to CH3COO- and H+.
