The wording in story problems are always tricky. Getting more experience doing story problems will make story problems easier as time goes by. However, we'll solve this problem for now.
First, Darlene's Dog = D, while Leahs Dog = L and therefore you have the equation
D + L = 84. However Darlene's Dog weighs 5 times Leah's Dog.
If the two dogs weighed the same, then D = L, but we need a mathematical representation of Darlene's Dog weighing 5 times Leah's Dog, just like we have a mathematical representation of when the dog's weigh the same (D = L). So let's look closely at the words we need to zoom in on to write that second equation.
Darlene's Dog weighs 5 times as much as Leah's Dog and together the dogs weigh 84 pounds.
We could say that Darlene's Dog is 5 times Leah's Dog. Think about that as:
D = 5L
So now in the equation D + L = 84, let's substitute D with 5L. When you do the equation changes to
5L + L = 84, and solve for L. Once you solve for L you have to insert the value of L into the equation D+L=84 then solve for D.
I hope this helps.
