why is adding first electron favorable and adding 2nd electron unfavorable?

Hmm.  OK.  Well, you know an atom is neutral.  So, if you add an electron, then, the electrons outnumber the protons. You have an anion.  If you add a second electron, then the electrons now outnumber the protons even more, in fact, by two.  Therefore, it can be said that in order to maintain the balance between electrons and protons, it becomes gradually more difficult to add electrons.
