that is constructed by a carpenter as a large square with sides of 12x feet and has a square cut out region whose sides are y feet. Factor the expression.

    top: 12 x 12 = 144

    bottom 12 x 12 = 144

   left side  = 12y

   right side = 12y

  back = 12y

  front = 12y

 

 

 288 + 48 y

  48(6 + y)

The area of the cabinet is (12x)² = 144x².

 

The area of the cutout is y².

 

The area of the surface is 144x² - y², which is the difference of 2 squares.

 

144x² - y² = (12x + y)(12x - y)
