3(x+4)=(x/2)-8

For algebra, it's always super helpful to define your variables right way. With this question, we are trying to find a number, or find the value of x.
Let's now break down the problem.
the sum of a number and 4 would be x+4. So if we multiply that be 3 we get 3(x+4)
one-half the number would be (x/2). 8 less than that is just subtracting 8 from (x/2) or (x/2)-8.
Once you do that, you can create the equation
3(x+4)=(x/2)-8
