I posted a comment but it did not get shown.
(8+[-3])/2=5/2=2.5 for the midpoint
5.5 is the number of units the midpoint is from -3 and from 8
-3 to 0 is 3 units, 0 to 2.5 is 2.5 units for a total of 5.5 units
8-5.5=2.5 again
