Draw yourself a picture. Divide a circle into 5 equal arcs. Assume each arc is 176 units long. Draw points at the start and end of each arc. Now draw a straight line connecting the two endpoints you just drew. That line is SHORTER than the 176 unit arc. Hence the sides of the pentagon (which connect the endpoints of the five arcs) need to be shorter than 176 units.

Thanks David W. for your answer. Are you saying that an arc of 176 is not the same length as a straight line of 176. To put it another way, does a circle of 22 equal a straight line of 22. If we convert a circle of 22 into a straight line, does it change the length. Thanks
