Hello Shaun,
For PE(MD)(AS), multiplication and division are at the same level, just as with addition and subtraction, which is why I have put each pair in parentheses. Which ever comes first from left to right out of those pairs, you do first.
So,
9 - (12)(-4) ÷ 8
= 9 - (-48) / 8, by doing the multiplication,
= 9 - (-6), by doing the division,
= 9 + 6, since subtracting a negative is adding,
= 15.
