The atomic radius increases going from right to left within a period because the energy level of the valence electrons is the same, but there are fewer protons in the nucleus as we go left.

OK, so the electrons are attracted less strongly moving right to left because of the fewer protons as you move left, and therefore are able to move farther from the nucleus. Then conversely, moving left to right, there are more protons and they are attracted more strongly to the nucleus, making the atom "tighter". Thank you for the clarification.
