Leif Erikson was a Viking and the first European to set land and discover the new world. Erikson was sailing back towards Greenland but the seas and strong winds took him to a new land instead which he called "Vinland" during the year 1000 ce. It is believed that Vinland is near the present-day Saint Lawrence River in northeastern Canada. Erikson named the land Vinland for the timber and grapes. Vinland means land of wine in Nordic. Erikson told other Vikings about useful resources in Vinland.
