The easiest way to manage mixed numbers in my opinion is to convert them to improper fractions, do the needed operations and convert back to mixed numbers if necessary.

 

Of course, 2 3/3 is just 3 but that makes 9/3.

 

9/3 - 23/3 = -14/3 = -4 2/3
