The median is the middle value when the numbers are written in numerical order. This list is already in order, but you may have to rewrite some of your other homework problems. If there is an odd amount of numbers in the list, the median is the middle number. If there is an even amount of numbers (as in this case), you may have to find the average of the middle two. In this case, the two middle numbers were both 5, so your median is 5.

The mean is another word for the average, which you find by adding up the numbers and dividing by how many numbers there are.

sum to 55. divide by 6 = 55/6 = 9 1/6 = the mean = the arithmetic average

the median is the middle number, or the average of 2 middle numbers if there are an even number of numbers

the mode is also 5, the number which appears most often. there are 3 5's and only 1 of each of the other numbers.

The sum of these 6 numbers is 55, not 45 as a few others have indicated. The mean is 55/6 or the mixed fraction 9 and 1/6 or as a decimal 9.1666666....(the 6 repeats forever). The median is 5 as others have reported correctly since it is in the middle of 4 5 5 5 11 25.  Please remember to put the data in order (either from smallest to largest or largest to smallest) first. Then you can see what number(s) is/are in the middle. As others have noted above,  the median (middle number) of a data set with an even number of elements, will be the average of the two middle numbers (in this case 5 and 5). In other examples (suppose the middle two numbers were 7 and 11. Then the median would be 9. This median would not be one of the elements in the data set.) Of course when the number of elements contained in the data set is an odd number there is only one number in the middle. It may. of course have equivalent values above and/or below this median value (as in this original problem.) 

 

I wanted to also mention that this data set has a mode of 5. The mode is always the Most Occurring Data Element. That is how I tell my students to remember it. Also, the words median and middle both have six letters. Mean is the measure of central tendency for which I do not have a clever way of remembering (that he is the average.)  Oh, but that is ok, since we know how to determine the other two measures of central tendency. (smile)

The median is the middle number if you put them in size order.  In this case, there are 6 numbers, so the average of the 3rd and 4th numbers is the median.  Since both numbers are 5, the median is 5

Think of median being like a median when you drive.  When you drive a car, the section the middle that you can stay on is called the median.  Median = middle.

The middle number here is 5.  If there are even amount of numbers, then you take the 2 middle numbers, add them, and divide by 2.

Think of mean being what did you mean by that or what did you mean to do in most cases.  Mean = average of what it usually is.

To get a mean, you add up all the numbers.  Then, you count the number of digits.  You divide the addition by the number of digits.
