The answer to this question depends on which particular format you use in the paper.  For example, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) standard is used a lot in the humanities and social sciences.  They have a certain format spelled out in an APA handbook. The journals of the American Physical Society and American Chemical Society have another format. There is no single right answer.  It depends on which standard is used by your publishing organization.  Your teacher may require you to use a specific standard, so you need to find out which one it is, look it up, and comply with it.
