When the sun moves from a 30 degrees elevation to a 25 degrees elevation, a shadow cast by a building is 62 meters long. How tall is the building?

 We must find the height of the building using trigonometry. We know that the elevation angle of the sun has gone from 30 degrees to 25 and we also know that the length of the shadow is 62 cm.

The angle of elevation is 25 degrees.  The side opposite this angle is the height of the building.  The side adjacent to this angle is the length of the shadow.  Since we have opposite and adjacent, we use tangent.

 

tan 25 = h/62m
