Ms. Fuller needs to separate $385 into three parts to pay some debts. The second part must be five times as large as the first part. The third part must be $35 more than the first. How much money must be in each part? Write and solve an equation.

the second part is 5p

 

the third part is p+35

 

all together, you have 7p + 35 = 385

 

so 7p = 350, so p = 50.

 

so the first part is 50, the second part is 250, and the third part is 85. together they make 385!
