Substitution means that we take the value of a variable and place it into the other equation:
y = 2x - 3
x + y = 1
x + y = 1
So in the set of equations above we have a value for y in the former, so we plug it into the latter:
x + (2x - 3) = 1
simplify:
3x - 3 = 1
Ad 3 to both sides:
3x = 4
Divide by 3:
x = 4/3
From here, you can solve for y by placing the x-value into the first equation.
