what is the acceleration

Tanya pulls on a 2 kg rope with a force of 100 N. Keith pulls in the opposite direction with a force of 80 N. What is the acceleration of the rope? Does it accelerate towards Tanya or Keith?

Assuming Tanya pulls in the positive direction,

F = (100 - 80) N = 20 N

a = F/m = (20 N)/(2 kg) = 10 m/s²

 

It accelerates toward the person who applies greater pull.  That is Tanya.
